Pub Guide: Mason & Company
With a backing from the consistently brilliant Five Points our expectations were reasonably high for Mason & Co, though heading in we did not expect much in the way of beer curation experimentation.
Indeed, from first glance this delightful spot could easily have struggled in straddling the line between its many functions as a street food, craft beer and coffee refuge along Hackney East's picaresque canal.
We needn't have had such worries though - Mason & Co not only hits sweet point between pub dedication to the brew and minimalist bar haven, but the lovingly crafted taps that adorn the bare, airy bar are filled to the brim with exciting, daring beers.
Capish, an Italian-American street food joint provides the starting point for our rather extended visit. A porchetta sandwich dissolves in our mouthes while a tangy meatball sub offers the best of both meaty worlds. Washed down by Northern Monk's beautifully delicate Striding Edge and it all comes a bit too easy for this Hackney spot.
But that's not to say they aren't trying, far from it. Where similar spots have stagnated over beer choices M&Co offers the welcome retreat of a Five a Points Pale alongside a Blueberry sour.
Whether you're looking for a delectable, and intriguing ice cream choice (We opted for Nonna's twisted salted apple) or for a fresh a coffee these guys refuse to play it safe or simple.
Sure they could easily cash in with some Pils and a Lagunitas on tap but that's beside the point. These lot have begun to nurture a real sweet spot along the canal, and amongst serious competition they've quickly found a gap in the market.
In doing so Mason & Co have created a venue worthy of a great trip in their own right. Sure it's worth the travel to Hackney East for a trip regardless, but this is your premier spot. This is now your cherry on the craft-beer-shaped-liquidy-cake.
